Spice Girls not reuniting for Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, confirms Mel C
Posted on Wednesday, 15 February 2012 by Sebastian

Mel C has confirmed that the Spice Girls will not reform for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert.

The ‘Wannabe’ group had been tipped to make a special appearance at the Buckingham Palace concert on June 4, after Mel B appeared to let slip the news on Australian TV last month.

However, Mel C announced during an appearance on Lorraine today (February 15) that there were no plans for the Spice Girls to reunite.

On the Jubilee concert, she said: “It’s such an incredible opportunity and what a wonderful thing to be able to do, the concert looks like it’s going to be out of this world. But unfortunately we don’t plan to perform or reform, so I’m sorry to disappoint anybody.

“We often have things that we talk about and it was something that we discussed, but unfortunately it’s not going to happen.”

Seemingly referring to claims that Victoria Beckham had rejected a reunion, she continued: “We have to respect each other’s wishes. We reformed in 2007 [for a tour] and we had an amazing time, the show was incredible. That kind of feels like our final farewell.

“It would be such a great thing to perform for but, sadly not.”

Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Dame Shirley Bassey and Jessie J are among the acts confirmed to play the Diamond Jubilee concert, which has been organised by Take That’s Gary Barlow.

Girl Power – The ladies of 1994 – 1994 rises
Posted on Wednesday, 15 February 2012 by Sebastian

A nice little article about the ladies in music of 1994. Check it out below. To read the whole thing (about the other acts) click HERE.

As we continue our look back at the best of 1994 and it’s resurgence in today, we thought it apt to look at the ladies that were taking the world by storm. Girl Power anyone?

The Spice Girls
Although they had yet to release their debut single, the ultimate girl band The Spice Girls were signed to Heart Management Ltd in April of 1994.

Love them or hate them, you can’t deny that they defiantly put British girl groups on the map. Everywhere you went, there were little girls dressed to the nines as Baby, Sporty, Posh, Scary or Ginger, carrying Spice Girl’s Walkers crisps and playing with their Spice Girl’s Barbie’s.

Ok, that doesn’t sound too great but at least they were encouraging Girl Power and pre-teens everywhere suddenly had a sense of confidence.

Their pop music was unashamedly cheesy, choreographed and overhyped but they managed to get Meat Loaf in their debut film which obviously shows they must’ve been doing something right.

Creating one of the biggest franchises in musical history, there is yet to be another girl band to make it quite like the Spice Girls did.

Girls Aloud had a good go and The Saturdays seem to be doing well (not sure who’s buying their music) but nothing has stuck like the Spices.

Only recently, Little Mix on X Factor were consistently being called the new Spice Girls. Unless they stop releasing crap covers of good songs and quit dressing up like little rag dolls then maybe… just maybe.

I’d take a 1994 resurgence of girl bands than One Direction any day.

As one fifth of The Spice Girls, Melanie C had already sold 55 million records by the time she was 24, not to mention the 12 million she flogged afterwards as a solo artist. These days, things are a teensy bit harder, but the artist formerly known as Sporty reckons girl power is still alive and well

At a time when albums by superstars like Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé struggle to hit the one million sales mark, Melanie Chisholm, with her 25 platinum records, is something of a pop alien.

When we got our first glimpse of Mel C back in 1996, she was a backflipping, crop top-wearing loudmouth in a high ponytail and a nose ring. Pretty soon, her face was gracing everything from frozen pizza boxes to bean bags. Back then, being a pop star was big business, and no-one did more business than the Spice Girls. In 2012, it can take as few as 40,000 sales to score a number one album in the US; small fry compared to the 200,000 Spiceworld shifted in its first week in ‘97. How does Chisholm, who released her fifth solo album last year, rate the change in the industry?

“You know, it’s really hard to get feedback,” she says, “because there’s people downloading your music and enjoying your music that you may never know about. The industry’s going through a really weird time, you just don’t know what’s going to happen next. It’s forced people to rethink the way they put their music out there. All sorts has happened over the last few years, you see people doing deals with supermarkets that you never thought would do that. You have to do so much more work before you see any kind of result.”

With the Spice Girls, Chisholm had the kind of career that sets you up for life, so it’s remarkable that at age 38, she’s busier than ever. Having spent six months performing in the West End in Blood Brothers, she gave birth to her first child (a girl named Scarlett), ran the London triathlon and in 2011, released latest album, The Sea. Good Lord, Melanie. Don’t you ever feel like just kicking back and resting on your Spice Girls millions?

“You know, I don’t! The thing is, I want to keep making music for as long as I can. After the last album, I didn’t really have a plan, but when Blood Brothers came up, it was a real challenge vocally and mentally. Being on stage night after night, it’s really, really tiring and unusual. Even when you’re on tour, you’re not going to be playing eight shows a week. After that, I sort of felt the need to keep going.”

Next on the agenda is Spice Girls; The Musical, which is set to hit the stage by the end of the year.

“We talked about it way, way back,” she recalls. “The girls and I always thought the songs would be great in a musical. Then Geri had the idea to get Judy Craymer on board, she’s done Mamma Mia! so she’s got an amazing record with musicals, and Jennifer Saunders is writing the script. It’s going to be weird, they’re not gonna be portraying us but they’ll be singing all the songs. It’ll be brilliant to have younger people in the audience singing along.”

‘90s junkies look away now; Chisholm is about to deny that the globetrotting fivesome are reuniting at this year’s Olympic Games. Not that the Liverpool lass will be betraying her old moniker come July 27.

“I’ve never been approached about it, so unfortunately, the reunion isn’t going to happen, but I’m excited about the games and I’m hoping to get along to some of the events.”

Before that, there’s the small matter of an Ireland and UK tour. Mel will struggle to top a gig in the West End last December when she was joined on stage by Queen legend Brian May.

“It was one of those moments where you look up and you can’t believe it’s real.” she squeals. “I remember it so clearly. I have a mental picture ingrained in my head. It was just great. He’s such a star.”

Meanwhile, Chisholm is keeping schtum on a rumored duet with pop vixen Jessie J.

“That would be brilliant, wouldn’t it? But I think maybe you shouldn’t sing with people who are better than you! But I love Jessie J, I love her attitude and she really seems to know where she’s going.’

With female solo artists damn near dominating charts and award shows (just look at the Brits Critics’ Choice Award, which has been scooped by a woman five years in a row!), it seems like Girl Power is in better health than ever.

“It’s brilliant to see artists like Adele and Emeli Sandé doing so well,” Chisholm beams, before stopping to reconsider. “Well, it’s great for women, I don’t know how the men feel about it!”

Mel C gives The Sea a live airing in the Limelight, Belfast (March 3) and the Olympia, Dublin (5).

Melanie C adds voice to Whitney Houston tributes
Posted on Sunday, 12 February 2012 by Sebastian

EXCLUSIVE: Former Spice Girl Melanie C has spoken of her sadness at the death of legendary US singer Whitney Houston at the age of 48 – and revealed how Houston was one of the inspirations for her own career.

Mel C – aka Melanie Chisholm – at the screening of Barbie: A Mermaid’s Tale 2 in central London

Speaking at the UK premiere of Barbie: A Mermaid’s Tale 2; the singer told Metro.co.uk that she owed a debt to the late American soul star.

‘She was someone I used to sing along to in my bedroom when I was a kid, and in fact the first song I ever sang in front of a live audience was The Greatest Love of All – I know it had been recorded before, but it was Whitney who inspired me to sing it,’ she said.

Although details of Houston’s death are still unclear, she had endured a long and very public battle against drug abuse.

I was absolutely shocked and really saddened when I heard the news,’ said Melanie C.’She was such an incredible singer and had an incredible career but battled with those demons as so many great performers do. I’m really upset, it’s a very sad loss to music.’

Later this month Melanie C will be going out on her first solo tour in three years to promote her fifth and most recent solo album, The Sea.

As well as being inspired by Houston, she also revealed that she once crossed paths with her.

‘It was when I was working with Bryan Adams, promoting the song When You’re Gone, and we were doing a television show in Germany.

Mel C on Whitney: She was such an incredible singer

‘She was on the show too, so I did meet her, briefly. I was very lucky to have met her and it’s so sad to think that I’ll never have that opportunity again.’

Spice Girls Reunion Talks Are ‘Ongoing’
Posted on Thursday, 09 February 2012 by Sebastian

They have ‘unfinished business’

The Spice Girls are reportedly having “ongoing discussions” over the prospect of reuniting again in 2012.

The band are thought to feel a sense of “unfinished business” following the premature closure of their comeback tour in 2008.

“They’re all talking,” an insider told E!. “There is an ongoing discussion among the girls… there is a sense of an unfinished business.

“They have a lot to figure out. Right now, it is all just talking.”

Victoria Beckham is enjoying a successful career in fashion, whilst Emma Bunton and Mel B enjoy a healthy string of presenting work.

Melanie C has continued to release music, and Geri Halliwell is releasing a new solo album later this year.
